Re: Star Trek: Star Fleet Technical Manual
I still have it in the basement. It's a fun read, and was useful when I made a few props such as a 3D chess set or some of McCoy's instruments. I don't think I'd dream of pulling it out for a debate.

Re: A morality experiment: Actions versus motivations
The rightness or wrongness of an action ought be judged entirely by its consequences. The person taking those actions however can be judged on their motivations and the information they had at the time they made the choice. These sound a bit antagonistic, so I just wanted to clarify. Do you believe...

Re: What star wars clips should this guy have used?
I would not at all be surprised if these old ships were in fact newly produced off modernized versions of old designs. Especially if those old designs were more combat oriented. That would be my guess as well. IIRC, the few times that we've seen the interiors of TOS and TNG era Miranda/Excelsior cl...

Re: alien 5 Hicks returns
Has anyone thought about fitting some of the pre-production art going around into a script in their head? The derelict ship being examined in a warehouse, Ripley trying on what looks like a biomechanical alien suit, and wearing a suicide bomb pack with a dead-man's switch in her hand? I don't think ...

Re: Spaceship Speed Chart
How long does it take to cycle between jumps with the Improbability Drive? To me (I have limited knowledge of HGttG), both the Tardis and the Heart of Gold travel instantly, but I'd give the Tardis the edge for bring able to travel just about anywhere in time and space. Can the HoG do that? I would...

Re: alien 5 Hicks returns
Alien 3 had a pet dog and a bunch of pseudo religious assholes stereotyped to the point where I felt awkward even watching... and then The Eveel Company popping up out of nowhere as well as a completely unimpactful surprise revelation of identity for no reason. Sometimes I'm convinced I must have s...

Re: alien 5 Hicks returns
I have heard that Whedon, at least, was not happy with how the Alien film he worked on turned out. But I have no knowledge of Fincher's thoughts on the subject. I'd be interested to here them. Here was one instance I read about it. Not a shunning of his work, but definitely regret it couldn't have ...

Re: alien 5 Hicks returns
As a rule, I don't like the idea of basically erasing films from continuity because people don't like them. It feels lazy (they're saying "that didn't happen" rather than trying to fix what they have to work with) and petty and insulting to other film makers to effectively override and di...

Re: Suicide Squad - First trailer released.
I have to admit, I'm a bit weirded out by this premise. I enjoy a good root-for-the-anti-hero movie, but most of those seem to be flicks where the protagonist has vigilante leanings but hasn't been an actual convicted felon. Particularly folks like Blade, the Punisher, and V. This flick seems more l...

Re: Independance Day: Your Opinion
I enjoyed this review on the movie (love this site in general). I remember enjoying myself in the theater watching it, but wasn't quite sure what was wrong with it until reading more up on it later, in reviews like this one. The writing and performances really help you get past the plot holes (Will ...

Why just mammals? It would have been hilarious to see a school of minnows drowning somebody at the beach.

I've heard the "banana equivalent units" comparisons before. It's pretty large, so instead of embedding it I'll link to xkcd radiation chart. It's a great visual, and I wonder if it influenced this guy a bit. That's a nice chart. It would have been interesting to include the Demon Core cr...

Re: RIP: James Horner (composer)
He was the composer whose work led me to start collecting soundtracks, although I still had to wait many years for his complete collections to come out, such as my favorites, Star Trek II and III, Krull, and Aliens. I will miss him. May his music inspire countless generations to come.

Speaking of Midichlorians... IF one subscribes to that.... could a Trek doctor (Oh I don't know, one who uses SUPERBLOOD (tm) to resurrect the dead), or another doctor from a sufficiently advanced culture, not synthesize a hypospray of midichlorians to make Force users out of everybody? I would thi...

Geez, this sucks. I imagine it will be one sad memorial segment at the next Oscars. Time to pull out some old favorites for a fest, like The Creeping Flesh and Horror Express. I loved watching him work with his old friend Peter Cushing. Not Ep III and his 3 minutes with his head on a digital body o...

John's G-force tolerance aside, I couldn't help thinking Scott is incredibly strong too, to be able to hang onto that grappling gun at that altitude. The focus of the episode was swamped with safety issues, so why not have him use a tether by example?

Oh, please, get real. She didn't lose her ship, was ordered out of the system by the senior commanding officer present, and came back with a taskforce which saved Grayson in time and saw to the Queen's overriding mission according to Courvosier, to come back with a treaty. There's no reason to cour...

Re: Honor Harrington without Honor
I think the story would go to Alice Truman. That assuming she isn't unofficially blamed for being part of operation that resulted in total loss of whole task force and sidelined (or simply left as commander of cruiser and have little influence on later events). Did Truman had protectors anywhere ne...

Re: Honor Harrington without Honor
If Mayhew were very clever he might pull it off, I suppose. I think he's clever enough. It was a foreigner and a woman who fit his plans, one who would be reasonably accepted by Graysons for defending their world. Mayhew definitely develops a track record for offering similar individuals a stake on...

I think the story would go to Alice Truman. With Fearless and Troubadour destroyed, Truman would be the senior surviving member of the taskforce. Mayhew is no dummy, and with Truman present in the system while White Haven is sweeping up Masada, I think Mayhew would latch onto her as both a woman and...
