Re: Why are Aboriginals so worse off?
The problem with the Aboriginals is that we got cold feet and stopped our attempt at genocide when we were only half-done. If we had never started it, we wouldn't have disrupted the family ties so much, so they'd have more functional families, and, hopefully, less alcoholism and social dysfunctions...

Re: Republican/Conservative Hypocrisy?
Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying we should just tear up the environment and spew poison into the air for shits and giggles, just that the well being of a bunch of trees and rare birds is ultimately less important than things like Obama spending our government into pauperhood. Except that you are ...

Re: Republican/Conservative Hypocrisy?
It's not hypocrisy, just different values. Who gives a fuck about the environment when we live in cities? I'd rather be more worried about things that will actually affect my children, like, yes, Obama's rampant spending making a huge debt burden they'll have to pay off. That said, though, it's not...

I hope you had the foresight to get her cryogenically frozen, so that this loss is ultimately temporary. If you didn't, the pain you're feeling is noone's fault but your own. Death is bad, and the bad feelings are there for a reason. Even if you lost her permanently, though, hopefully you'll get ove...

This seems like a really good way to destroy the universe if something goes wrong.
Of course, that could well be a part of the plot of this as the aliens flee the universe-destroying wavefront propagating at the speed of light.

Re: Jobless Need Not Apply
If you keep getting rejected from job applications because you've been unemployed for too long, what's stopping you from just starting your own business and using that as your relevant thing instead? Even if the 'business' is just on paper, at least you'll have something to put on your resume.

Re: Transformers 3 Superbowl Trailer
With the current crop of fully articulated transformers, I can only imagine the sort of work they put into designing each toy. Do you guys think that they use software of some sort to design the toys now, that makes it much easier (compared to the 80s) to design fully articulated robot modes? I'd b...

You know, if I was going to do an alien invasion movie, I'd have the aliens roll up into orbit, and then broadcast the following. "Our observations of your society indicates that you will possess recursively self-improving artificial intelligences within the next twenty years. These artificial ...

Re: Would this be possible? Sex ratio
Actually, I'll point out that there's a parasite that spreads among insects that turns the males into females, and causes females to give birth parthenogenetically, so something like this is vaguely possible.
It wouldn't stop population growth, though, just decrease genetic diversity.

Re: Bruce Wayne wakes up in the Watchmen universe
The Question read the Watchmen comics, tried to act like Rorschach, got his ass busted and concluded that "Rorschach sucks!". I wonder if Batman ever read the comics. I wouldn't be surprised if he has, given all their trouble with parallel universes, so if he wound up there, he'd almost c...

Re: FTL travel g-forces
IIRC, an Iranian physicist proposed using an array of tiny tubes to harness the Casimir effect to produce negative energy. I dunno how feasible that might be, though. Normal matter won't get you Casimir plates anywhere near that fine. The closest thing I'm aware of is a proposal by to use the Casim...

Re: FTL travel g-forces
This isolation negates portions of Einstein's specific relativity, while leaving general relativity intact... or, I might have those reversed (it's been a few years since college, and QM wasn't exactly the primary field of study). It's special relativity. And QM has little to do with what you're ta...

Re: FTL travel g-forces
As for going FTL, g forces cease to matter because it's impossible to go FTL by simply pouring on acceleration regardless of rate. You're never going to go faster than c no matter how hard or long you step on the gas. You either have the magic trick that allows you to go FTL or you don't. True, but...

Also, somebody needs to tell Rorschach that a) he's paranoid, b) The Question is a lot better at paranoid than he is, and c) his mask looks patently silly. Fuck no. Rorschach's mask is awesome, and Batman would be a hypocrite if he condemned someone else for paranoia. Rorschach's not even that para...

Re: A Squelch of Empires (crossover)
My take on the Deathwatch is that they're so extensively conditioned (and chosen for a certain mindset) that they become the very model of a "good Imperial thinker." All about close-up analysis of the situation, very little ability to take a step back from the immediacy of things, all tac...

I'm hoping that whoever's on the other side of that phone will realise that the farmer shot first (possibly illegally, I might add, depending on the laws of his state), and that the aliens haven't retaliated at him for doing so, and send in the linguists and diplomats rather than the military. Also, I've never read the graphic novels or watched the whole movie, but didn't V die from the dozens of gunshot wounds he took in that last fight scene?
