Re: Resisting the superlaser.

If we allow the downright ridiculous, Gurren Lagann iterations at least from Super-Galaxy size should be able to survive. The Super-Galaxy Dai-Gurren might be able to shrug it off as well.

Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!

If those yellow things are the only thrusters, they're not enough, I think. Remember, thrusters aren't just for turning, they're for small-distance maneuvering, in all directions. Even if they're really powerful and multivectored, their positions would create unnecessary strain on the hull, not to m...

Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!

Hm. Well they sure LOOK like escape pods. Might've needed a bit of an explanation. Anyway, nice to see your design finally complete. You really put a lot of work into it. It looks great. Mine could've looked just as good (okay, not as good, but maybe close) if I'd bothered to continue after learning...

Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!

A detail caught my eye in the shot on the contest site. I don't say it's bad or anything (not that it can be changed anyway), but does it really make sense to have a row on escape pods on the nacelles like that?

Re: Eve Online Art Contest! : Design a Starship!

I've been aware of the contest long ago, but didn't want to enter anything because, well, I tend to fall short of finishing things, so I couldn't possibly make anything notable. But I did have an idea of sorts, and while now is quite too late, I still decided to spend an hour or two today, and draw ...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Yet no real military wants two part aircraft carriers, or two part missile cruisers. Better to just have two ships that stay as two ships, you can put more fight into a smaller dedicated warship and more luxury into a family/repair ship that follows behind and stays back until the all clear is give...

Re: Humble Indie Bundle #2

And Dwarf Fortress also sucks. That's 2 for 2. *marks Stark down in the "eternal enemy" list* But seriously. The HIB doesn't sell because of any given game. Personally, I enjoy Cortex Command much more than Braid (or Osmos. Or Machinarium. I'm kinda enjoying RotT though.), so you sh...

Re: Humble Indie Bundle #2

It's fucking hilarious they're at release 24 and still in beta fully three years after they were at release 18 and in beta. Well, that's not much of an indicator in and of itself. Dwarf Fortress is still an alpha after what, eight years of development? Major version number went up from .21 to .31. ...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

The point of a separating ship is twofold. One, on a ship that's not exclusively a battleship, like the Enterprise, the crew includes various families and other civilians. Two, a pair of ships is harder to destroy than just one. Two point five, a direct hit that pulverizes a detachable part of the s...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Some are hand drawings. Which isn't so bad in and of itself, but the images aren't too great either. One of the designs looks like an Akira (or a Steamrunner) class, as designed by Weiland-Utani. A distinct blocky feel.

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Neat nacelles. The contest, however, is only valid in the US, and even then not everywhere. What kind of demented idea is that? Seriously. It's not like they'll have much problem mailing anything anywhere. I guess I'll just have to sit here in assurance that my model is superior to others - because ...

I think they forgot the rest of the text existed. They still plan on using a "spceial" tool. Their spellchecker is probably just as spceial.

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

The twin hulls certainly have purpose. No single hit into the side will be able to destroy the whole engineering section, shuttles coming from/into the main bay get cover, plus there aren't really many troubles with getting around in there. The split saucer section could have purpose too, but it's n...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Well, uniqueness is certainly one reason. Others could include a shuttle bay, a downward view from the bridge, and yeah, maybe a ridiculously large weapon pylon. Or a ridiculously large shuttle as a "detachable" ship. :)

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Yeah, quite the "big and beefy" design you've made there, Fuzzy. I've stopped detailing my primary model for now, because I've ran out of ideas and decided to start another one from scratch. http://i54.tinypic.com/3460sb6.png A little bigger, drops the dual secondary hull but adds a split ...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

I'm working on that now, but I really can't find anything to add. Useless 'goblins' might provide some variety, but I'm really not sure what a Star Trek ship would have in such places. Underside of the Sovereign class is just hull plating and escape pods. Underside of the Galaxy class is a smorgasbo...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

A tad... smallish, I guess, but look fine.

I'm still not too happy with the nacelle design. They just dont look right. Maybe it's the blue areas being too rounded? I don't know, they look odd to me.

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Yeah, that might work. Although I still fail to see why the bridge can't remain on the separated saucer. I mean, other than for the sheer novelty value.

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

That looks like one perilous separation manuever. You'll basically need to vertically clear the whole height of the saucer section on thrusters, while maintaining relative speed. Not something easily done in an emergency. Docking would be about an order of magnitude worse, the margin for error is no...

Re: High-energy impacts with Styrofoam

Just for how long could a styrofoam planetoid survive in the Solar system, anyway? How much energy would it gather from the Sun? I don't think it'd be quite light enough to be noticeably pushed by the solar wind, but the heat itself would probably build up until the whole thing melts. And for the im...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

So many phaser arcs... that's a battleship! *looks at own design with a dozen phase cannon turrets* ...um, yeah, right. To answer your question, the saucer section doesn't need a deflector if it only has impulse power. You can put a shuttlebay or a cargo bay there instead, but a secondary deflector ...

Re: OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

The NX-01 was part of the inspiration, yes, but mostly for the deflector dish. The secondary hulls were supposed to reflect those of the (inverted) Akira, and the nacelles... I don't know, I just slapped them on where they most fit. :) NX-01 is rather different though, especially in the rear, but it...
