Re: Using expired N95 masks?

Apart from inhaling birs of foam - my fear would be the degraded foam in the mask means you do not get a good seal anymore Yeah the shitty seal is really shitty, increases risks. I'm trying to remove the particles with tape. Otherwise I could layer it with a normal mask or even tissue paper just to...

Using expired N95 masks?

As a last resort. I have a bunch and the vexing thing is that a bunch have had their nosepiece foams degrade, so there are particles lining the interior of the mask. Yes, I know ideally these would've been discarded the second they became expired (there are US gov't guidelines on using expired but w...

Re: Choreography of a fight scene in movies

Even in non-western contexts there are more conservative and abrupt choreography that are rife with narrative and tension - i.e. samurai flicks with quick kills and ends. Which drew (haha) inspiration from and later on gave inspiration to Western gunslinger films. Pro-wrestling has multiple types of...

Re: Vader vs Obi-Wan fight fanfilm

Wushu Yoda works when you see it for the first time in the cinema. Audience didn't know what to expect from Yoda, and to see him jumping arond makes you feel "wow, that's really cool, I didn't know he can do that". It was both incredible and kind of silly even at the time. That's your preference th...

Re: Let's talk about the Terrans (Starcraft)

Is it ever explained how the UED was able to keep track of what was going on in the Koprulu Sector, how they got there so quickly, and what happened to their forces back on Earth? Perhaps the UED developed long-range scans? If psionics isn't a Koprulu-only phenomenon maybe the UED has some psi-corp...

Re: Vader vs Obi-Wan fight fanfilm

Those are how the script is written, which is different from the choreography style. You can have flashy choreography and still use those good dialogue. I think you need to distinguish the script from the choreography. They are two different things. That's what I'm trying to explain, when films are...

Also, the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the US showed American audience as being able to engage with Chinese Wuxia movies. Name another wuxia style movie that had the same level of success over here? Hero, as Ray pointed out too. And the Matrix movies :P Even Kill Bill. Not wuxia swo...

Re: Vader vs Obi-Wan fight fanfilm

Musicals have existed in the US and the West, and animated Disney films still involve singing parts, so a Bollywood-style epic film with singing bits and interludes won't be far-fetched... as long as the music plays to local tastes. I mean imagine if there was a Tron-ishy cyberpunky film and the son...

This is the same difference between Stone Cold style pro-wrestling where he just flips people off and hurls punches and stomps a mudhole in 'em and then STUNNER BAH GAWD STUNNER, or Hulk Hogan and Macho Man-esque wrestling, where it's charisma and ring psychology... versus lucha, Rey Mysterio, or hy...

Re: Vader vs Obi-Wan fight fanfilm

Weren't they all choreographed by Peter Diamond? Apparently that was for Ep 4, but not Ep 5 and 6. Bob Anderson was the one doing the swordfighting as Vader, because David Prowes simply cannot master the fight choreography. So there you have it, the fights -were- done by pros who've choreographed s...

Re: Vader vs Obi-Wan fight fanfilm

Uh, ANH's fight choreography WAS done by actual pros who knew real actual swordplay. Maybe the original could be remastered with more "meaty" sabers and sounds, since back then the look and feel and effects process of the sabers were still first-gen whereas by ESB and ROTJ the methods had developed....

Which does bring into my wondering about Arcturus's rule, in that he had his puppet press corps, but also was locking up every dissenter he could. I'm wondering just why he was locking up scientists on that list, as either they were a bunch of crazy folks who needed to be locked up, or they were pu...

Re: Let's talk about the Terrans (Starcraft)

I guess that would really depend on how much influence Matt Horner has on Valerian, as after Wings of Liberty, the two become almost joined at the hip, and in the game epilogue, are working together to reform the Dominion. That could mean a sort of Roman Empire becomes a Roman Republic with Consul ...

It could also be reflected in how the UED brass seem to be very Euro-centric with Dugalle and Stukov. Yeah I like the strange futurized cultural mishmash myself. If one wants to really expand the Terran stuff, one could go on about how while Mengsk was once a revolutionary, he was still of upper-cla...

Maybe the Terrans have some rather good terraforming capability and Mengsk used a lot of his GDP to make Korhal actually worth walking on after the Brood war? I know in at least one novel, Mengsk is watching his coronation speech over and over again, trying to drown out the endless sounds of constr...

I disagree; I think the "suicide as a solution"/blaze of glory/heroic martyr convention goes much more to the power fantasies and escapaism than subverts them. Aside from Rose stopping Finn from doing that, when Holdo did it, I think it was subverted because her attack was precisely because of the ...

Maybe it'd be less of a apprenticeship and more of a familial thing, so none of the detached emotionless stuff, more of a surrogate community and we can even have Finn and Poe and Rose and others acting as Cool Uncle/Aunts and such to nurture well-rounded individuals who have the basis, as good peop...

The great heroes having no other avenue left and having to resort to such things might also be part of TLJ's playing with the conventions - showing the consequences and the no-other-choices people end up in, which discomforts and makes hard the happy-go-lucky power projection fantasies and escapisms...

Re: Spiderman - into the spider verse.

Noir, at least, was based off a rather good comic miniseries set in the 1930s wherein Peter is living in the Great Depression, so it's based off an existing work, rather than a cultural influence, or at least not solely a cultural influence. Seeing as superhero comics draw on the ubermensch concept...
