Re: Stark Trek Into Darkness *SPOILERS*
And just like last time, I want to tie JJ Abrams to a chair and beat him half to death with a stage light. I went and saw Iron Man 3 just recently and I didn't have a single issue watching metal robots wrestle superhumans for two hours, but I had to repeatedly wince and squint at STID. I hate his g...

Re: Stark Trek Into Darkness *SPOILERS*
What happened next just tore me completely out of SoD. They're halfway to the moon; free-fall from rest to the Earth would take about 40 hours. At least I can chalk up the varying gravity to the Enterprise's tumbling, but that 40 hours went pretty damn fast. Exterior shots of the falling ship went ...

Re: Stark Trek Into Darkness *SPOILERS*
I really enjoyed the movie. J.J. Abrams really knows how to handle outer space -- he makes the "Star" in Star Trek super fucking beautiful. Khan was the best character, trailed closely by Spock; I want to echo CC and Valdemar that this movie was about Khan versus Spock, down to the fight ...

Re: Stark Trek Into Darkness *SPOILERS*
That was really my biggest problem with the first movie. If you want to have new movies in the same universe by having a tie in via the whole Spock thing fine but then have to two universe's consistant with each other. Just because they didn't make many good movies with that universe doesn't mean y...

THREAD NECROMANCY!!! Anyway, for those who are interested, the United States Supreme Court heard arguments in this case on Feb. 23, 2010 (I happen to have been there, which is why I am sitting around searching for threads about the case). Just last week I was playing Might and Magic VI, and my roommate walked in and accused me of committing goblin genocide.

Re: Star Trek, five months later
The interesting thing about TOS is that the message it had was humans weren't perfect, but they were striving to better themselves. In comparison to TNG, the message was more "We're as good as we can be, we don't need to improve at all." Although that could have been good if it were done ...

Re: So I read the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I read all seven books in a row, for the first time, when I heard they were making a movie. I thought the writing was not spectacular, but it flowed fairly easily, and the stories were simple but engaging. Very much like Harry Potter, actually. Both are series that I've read all of exactly once, tha...

Re: 2009 Major League Baseball Postseason
You mad 'cause the Phillies are stylin' on you? I have a long-standing disdain of Philadelphia. It's not anger, per se, because it's kind of dumb to be angry at a city . But specifically, I cannot root for a Philadelphia baseball team as an entity, even though I utterly despise the American League(...

Re: 2009 Major League Baseball Postseason
I was at NLCS Game 3. I just want to say, the crowd of normally rabid people was downright mean tonight. Sitting off of left field I don't think there was a moment where Manny wasn't being jeered by someone or the other. I haven't been in attendence for an ass-kicking so complete since ... ever, an...

Re: NHL 2009-2010 Season
Defensively, I'd be worried about the Caps more than the Flyers after that game. Flyers scored weak goals on weird possessions. DC's defense is just not very good at anything other than Mike Green scoring goals. Flyers, on the other hand, allowed two goals off awful turnovers including a virtually u...

What do we know about the relationship between the Prophets and the Wormhole? I'd be concerned that killing them might destroy the wormhole entirely.

Re: Size of the new Enterprise
For reasons we do not know, they decided to build their ships significantly larger. Its really that simple. Could it be as simple as that the Kelvin was destroyed by a massive unknown ship, so Starfleet put more money into developing warships - hence the larger size? No, because the Kelvin was alre...

Re: Trek 09 Starfleet weapons, organization, etc. [Spoilers]
btw have you considered that the ships (the Kelvin and the Enterprise in this case) can put themselves closer to missiles when attacking warheads aimed at another ship since a miss won't mean impact to the shields/hull if you intercept the missiles far enough from their targets (aka when protecting...

Re: Trek 09 Starfleet weapons, organization, etc. [Spoilers]
On some thread or another someone remarked on the absurdity of the Kelvin and Enterprise both being able to use phasers to intercept missiles fired at other ships but not themselves. Obviously any way you slice it fine targeting is required (basically hitting a bullet with a bullet), but I wonder if...

Re: Size of the new Enterprise
I don't think the E-Nil in TOS was ever intended to be a flagship in the sense of actually having a flag staff aboard and coordinating fleet moves as opposed to SHOWING the flag, as in being around potential trouble spots so the local Feds would know they were being watched over by one of Starfleet...

Re: Size of the new Enterprise
That looks just about right to me. Starfleet has never been described as having "capital ships" like ISDs or Battlestars, but in comparison to those 1701 looks roughly cruiser sized. Of, course, there is an astronomical difference in habitable space, but 1701 isn't intended to carry soldie...

Re: Size of the new Enterprise
It doesn't even have to be a livable deck. The dome could now house sensors, a la the globes on a Star Destroyer. Kind of my problem, if it is just ship systems, then why is it a deck? If it is a deck, what do you put into it and why so small a space? This is why I left the dome as a "deck 0&q...

Re: Trek 09 Starfleet weapons, organization, etc. [Spoilers]
*snip alt-plot* Damn, that I like . I was going to suggest that the RSE was actually dicking around creating subspace weapons and destabilized the sun. It is interesting that the Red Matter could be used/interpreted as a subspace weapon, which at last we heard in the 'classic' canon, was as illegal...

Bounty is right.
The issue with the proportions is one of perspective as the camera zooms by, I think, although I would like to see a screencap to be sure.
