Re: How likely is it for a 787 Dreamliner to have it's wings snap or its chassis break apart during flight?
Based on a cursory search it looks like Archinist may be referring to http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2003/s860702.htm this incident in Australia from 2000. Essentially, a chartered Beechcraft exceeded its assigned altitude, the crew and passengers blacked out from hypoxia and the plane crashed. Th...

None of the big "craft" brewers are any good. This goes for Shiner especially.

Re: Book recommendation/request thread
K. A. Pital, would you have any recommendations of good historical works on Bloody Sunday and Father Gapon? I've been fascinated with the subject since writing an undergraduate thesis on it but English-language sources seem to all be old and contradictory. My Russian reading skills aren't much but I...

Re: Replica Ship Question
...and it appears I've been out of the modeling loop for a while. Fine Molds actually lost the Star Wars license. You can still find the old kits here and there but the price has gone up appreciably as supply dwindles. Bandai has the current license, and reviews of their new 1/72 X-Wing and Vader's ...

Re: Replica Ship Question
Since you have a large collection of the Hasbro figures I assume you want preassembled ships, right? You're out of luck there if you want everything to be scaled. If you are willing to build models, Fine Molds has a collection of most of the movie fighters in 1/72 and a few in 1/48. The quality is f...

Re: Lucasarts on GOG
Can anyone who downloads either X-Wing or TIE Fighter clarify a few questions for me? The blurb mentions both the 1994 and 1998 versions, but this is a fairly vague statement. X-Wing in its original format was released in 1993, with the CD Collector's Edition in 1994 that added voiceovers. The same ...

Yeah if you have an eye dropper try adding a couple of drops that way. Spirits really will help though, you can get them very cheaply from any hardware store.

Re: Using washes on models
Exactly. Whether it's an enamel or acrylic wash the principle is the same, and cleanup will be very easy with no paint to worry about. Just don't use say an enamel clear coat and then enamel washes because obviously the paint thinner will remove both layers. On a painted subject like the one you men...

Re: Using washes on models
Well, the first thing about washes is they will apply a lot more easily over a gloss coat, but I don't know if you want to do that step since the idea is to leave them unpainted. I assume you won't. All you really need to do is apply the paint to the panel lines with a thin brush, wait for it to set...

I think this picture illustrates what I was talking about with moveable switches blocking the channels so a new color can be used. At least that's what it seems like, Rogue probably understands that patent much better than I do.

Re: Action figures
Yeah, to my understanding both plastic and resin kits are normally treated in mold release agent after casting. It's a simple matter to remove it though, wiping it down with dish soap and rising is enough. Bandai actually some material about their manufacturing process but it's all in Japanese natur...

I'm not sure what the makeup of the beam saber parts and the like is, but normal clear parts are polystyrene, just a slightly different formula. That's why they are considerably more brittle.

Stark, are you primarily concerned with the perspectives of gaming miniature modelers and manufacturers or in general? If you are I'll bow out of the discussion at this point since I have no experience with either.

Re: Action figures
You'd think so, right? Honestly I don't know how to account why B-club was always super expensive. I think some of it might be the labor involved, as B-club products were always cast to a very high standard, especially when standards were so low in the 90s. Your typical garage kit, especially then, ...

Yeah I would consider replacing the hands for my old gundams with a magnetic hand because poor Tallgeese can't hold his massive cannon of a gun! :V While I don't know any industry specifics I do think you're spot on with regards to the economy of resin. There are a number of manufactures that do lim...

Re: Action figures
Yeah I do mostly historical kits and only the rare gundam so I generally have my kits displayed on a shelf and pretty much never touched. If you need to bond resin fiddly bits on a kit that's going to be moved a lot like a gundam that will take a very different approach.

Re: Action figures
Resin is fragile if you're dealing with thin bits, mostly. Anything fairly substantial should be just fine. Not everyone pins though, if you use sufficiently strong glue it'll usually work just fine. It really depends on what you need to do specifically and how you're planning on displaying the fini...

Re: Action figures
Resin kits are normally made of polyurethane resin and usually have to be fully scrubbed with a mold release agent before assembling and painting. If the kit has any bits that stick out a lot you'll usually have to drill out holes and insert a metal connecting pin to support the two halves. (Say to ...

Thing is the current ambassador has made so many shitty remarks about the current government and the country in general in these cables, that I don't think he'll be able to do his job as he did before, now that it's in the open. Which is why this stuff was considered sensitive and should have remai...

Re: Modified radar gun can pick out suicide bombers
Radar guns are too passive, no one will feel safe without the porn scanners and pat-downs. Just another reason why American airports are all show and no substance. The idea itself is really interesting, but the article is quite right that this needs refinement before we start pulling everyone who ma...

Real Mexican never fails to satisfy. A good homemade mole with tortillas is the best, and it pairs nicely with avocados and an Aztec peanut dip called ha sikil pak.

Re: New Republic vs. Galactic Empire
This is a pretty old versus, and it comes down to the same question: why should the Empire invade? What worth does any Star Trek government/race have to the Empire? Likewise, why should the New Republic intervene? Star Trek is simply orders of magnitude below Wars on a technological scale, so there'...
