https://www.minneapolisfed.org/publications/the-region/where-has-all-the-income-gone Economists are mostly corrupt pro-capitalist lapdogs "The evidence saying I'm wrong doesn't count, because literally an entire academic discipline is conspiring against me. Somehow." How do you feel...

Re: Is globalization dead or dying?
Why is it a good thing for the world to be more insular again? Has there been some revolutionary new finding that overturns the overwhelming consensus that international trade is hugely benefit? (No, no there hasn't). give everyone with a bank account 2000€ and watch as things start happening very f...

Re: Earth-sized planet found in Proxima Centauri's habitable zone
The expenditure of resources on hedging against extremely low probability threats needs to be weighed against other things they can be spent on. Again, there are plenty reasons to support extrasolar exploration, but I don't think fears about gamma ray bursts is going to be near the top of the list.

Re: Pacific Rim: substitution tournament
Even if we assume drift compatibility, it seems unlikely that any of these characters have the mental discipline to actually operate at Jaeger instead of getting stuck in flashbacks (the Random Access Brain Impulse Triggers mentioned before the first drifting sequence).

Re: Pacific Rim: substitution tournament
I take it we're assuming drift compatibility? Wasn't Crimson Typhoon objectively the strongest? It's never explicitly said which is 'strongest', but Striker Eureka is the most advanced of the five in the movie. Incidentally, Crimson Typhoon requires a crew of three, not two, so Ricky and Bubbles are...

Re: U.S. Military invade The Forest island. (The Forest)
The US military's greatest trouble in this scenario is likely to come from activists outraged over the US dispossessing a tribe of uncontacted natives in order to steal their oil.

Re: Earth-sized planet found in Proxima Centauri's habitable zone
For a society even somewhat more advanced than us, that's cheap for the opportunity to colonize an entire solar system. Why bother? It will most likely be an extremely long time yet before the Solar System is tapped out, and it's not like the Alpha Centauri colony is going to be sending stuff back ...

Re: Worldbuilding - racial implications of redwall type setting
They're all out of proportion. To give you an idea, a typical house mouse is about 40g. A typical badger is about 10kg. The difference in size between Cluny's vermin and the mice defending Redwall seem to be the difference between a big burly dude and a small one, not a literal order of magnitude. Y...

Re: U. of Chicago tells SJWs to shove it
ITT TIL SJW is an insult. There's nothing wrong with content notices for disturbing topics. The university hasn't told professors not to have them, there's no policy not to have them, and most professors who deal with such matters give content notices as a matter of routine. Trigger warnings are jus...

As for the Biotic field it's a really big "unknown" as we know it's effects only thru gameplay not lore. We don't see the biotic field directly in action outside of gamplay, but there's a comic where Ana Amari hits 76 with one of her regenerative biotic darts (based on the same tech) and ...

We don't really have much information on anything in Overwatch, especially since a lot of game mechanics are clearly just game mechanics (e.g. Junkrat's ability to blow himself up without harm or the fact that everyone has infinite ammo). Pharah is nominally wearing powered armor, but is exactly as ...

That matters, because a democratic society is at least in theory* answerable to the populace and can thus respond to public unhappiness and make changes in state-owned enterprises and output (certainly there are a fair number of public services that run reasonably well, and cases like the VA where ...

Don't tactical marines (which is what I'm assuming our random smurf is) carry a variety of grenades, including krak grenades? He still has to get close enough to use it, of course, but a krak grenade is a dedicated anti-tank weapon that should be capable of killing/disabling an Abrams.

the tank can manage 45mph at max but a marine can sprint atleast 50mph in some sources Even so, that means it will take the smurf almost 4 minutes to close distance on the reversing tank*, and that's assuming he's running straight at it (and thereby making an easier target). If he's not, it could t...

They seem relatively enlightened in the HP books, but those take place in the 90s, and even then there's still prejudice against non-human intelligent magical creatures. More than just prejudice. Nonhumans are banned from owning/using wands (which goblins are apparently quite salty about) and Wizar...

(As a general aside, I think it's worth noting that HP's worldbuilding is pretty haphazard, and I strongly suspect Rowling was mostly making it up as she went along and without a great deal of concern for consistency or plausibility. That's never stopped us before, though). -- This is because the wi...
