I imagine that most ships have heat sinks, or a cooling system that takes advantage of the coldness of space itself, to help off-set a certain level of heat accrued by active shielding (ie taking fire). However, just like all systems, it can be damaged and/or strained beyond its limits and therefore...

I also like the fact that it looks like the engine exhausts could be disengaged at the gimbal. So if one engine is perhaps damaged and at risk of blowing up or something, it could be ejected from the ship.

Headcanon is fun.
What does your head canon tell you?
I'm not allowed to answer that question.

Nice! Is that about the same size as the Imperial LAAV/i?
Looks to be about half again or more larger than the LAAV/i...
Seeing as how it look like it has the ability to project shields widely enough to even encompass other ships (let alone maybe even an entire fleet), why not call it something like:
Except that the X-Wing novels also specify that they have fore, aft, dorsal, ventral shields as well. So you'd need six globes for that to be true. Well, firstly "Thrawn Series" > "X-Wing series. :D Second, it's quite possible that the globes themselves have various parts to them tha...
There's also the question of whether there's a shield gap directly below the ship, where the shield generator attaches to the hull. Or... is that why all the Star Destroyers we've seen (I think) have two globes? I've always thought that each projector was for a separate side of the ship. There are ...
Seeing as how I don't wish to trouble fractal's thread any further, I'll post this here. "Every blueprint released by Star Wars resource books has always had those "globes" on the bridge noted as "deflector shield generators" . I'm still wondering why that is such a contenti...
Except that every blueprint released by Star Wars resource books has always had those "globes" on the bridge noted as "deflector shield generators" . I'm still wondering why that is such a contentious issue to some. The sensors are usually the dishes, such as we see on the Millen...

I'm assuming that that is a repair craft of sorts? Looks awesome! What's the source?
John Berkey, that's the one! Thanks for reminding me, Shrooms.
Legends had it that a ship's hyperspace motivator/shunt would burn out (or cut out) as a safety measure when encountering a gravity well of significance, thus the Interdictor-class with gravity-well projectors to prevent FTL escape. We see this can be disabled in TFA: the Falcon exists hyperspace a...

"You are correct, sir!"
If the shield gate was simultaneously the projector of, and only entrance through, the shield then it would mean that the shield did in fact go down. I'll have to go back and watch again. Can't wait to have this on BluRay.
