Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II

What's the vaccination rate in the UK? Because in the United States we're having a lot of problems with places that started removing safety precautions as soon as a vaccine existed, and were basically using "vaccine exists" as a pretext to pretend the whole pandemic never happened... And n...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

Yeah something like that sounds good.

I'm not really planning to play aggressively, for the moment, so having "and the Umerians were also there" for a while until I have the energy to deal with fleshing them out for the game a bit more would be nice.

...I've been feeling really overloaded by life lately, but I don't want to outright ditch the game. When's the planned game start deadline? Is there any way I can arrange to just be "out of the way" for a few turns and be retconned in later? Is that okay? I wouldn't be doing this to exploi...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

Basically don't worry about it too much. If your folk think they came from Earth 'recently', then chalk it up to either timey-wimey waffle caused by malfunctioning polarity in the flux capacitators in their lightspeed drives, time distortion caused by relativistic speeds, whatever. We can assume th...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

I guess it depends on whether the fighters are cheap enough to be considered ammunition or not. If your combat strength would be materially altered by not being able to pickup the fighters as you leave, put the points in the carrier, and don't worry about it too much. If they would be altered by no...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

Hm. OK, yeah. At the low end, the old Umerian navy had a whooooole lot of mass-produced FTL-capable "cutters" with short-ranged drives, with endurance measured in, like... days, tops... that were designed to operate off small, highly vulnerable tenders. They had small crews and were a grea...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

Hm. I'm sorry if this is a redundant question, but as I try to do ORBAT stuff seriously, I find myself reflecting on the role of both sublight drone-carrier craft and short range FTL-capable "cutter" swarms in the Umerian military as envisioned in SDNW4. How, if at all, do those categories...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

Ships have some limited special attributes - there's also a cap of size 50 total size (including specials!) unless you invest national points into improved shipyards. The Umerian order of battle was calibrated for a much larger (SDNW4) total point value, so there is no danger of any individual ship...

Re: STGOD 2020 Concept/Planning Thread

I'll take whatever works; I'm playing a human colony state produced by a long range colony expedition in the relatively distant past, since that seems to be the basis of our planning. EDIT: To be clear, I'm talking about nation location and accepting being rolled up as a, ah... 'successor' is the wo...

Re: STGOD 2020 OOC Thread

OK, so, thinking about order of battle, I'm planning a pretty straight port of the old SDNW4 Technocracy of Umeria. 3000 points to spend on the military, 500 to spend on national bonuses, and 100 to spend on planets, which are on a 1-10 scale? I know the vote's over. Are there 'specials' on ships or...

Re: STGOD 2020 Concept/Planning Thread

Having order of battle threads is a common innovation and does no harm.

But it's a bad idea to segregate nation-building and drafting of things TO the order of battle thread.

Especially here on SDN, where you can't edit things half the time, which just makes it fucking awkward.

I think we should just skip to a runoff. Trying to talk it out is just going to result in us going around in circles; we all have our reasons and could debate those reasons indefinitely. I'll probably keep participating no matter what gets picked, though I can't help but find some of the old ruleset...

Re: Plot to Kidnap Michigan Governor, Start Civil War

Sadly, it's not gonna happen until someone with actual directing authority orders the machinery of the state's security organs to systematically take the far-right movements apart. Which won't happen under the Trump administration for several obvious reasons. I very much hope Biden does so, because ...

Look, we're all ten or more years older than that now, a good deal more mature and hopefully more sane about how to get along together. I'll be honest, I find the idea of cultural appropriation to be a fundamentally ridiculous concept, and a frankly bizarre one for anyone on the left to express given it seems firmly rooted both in a conception of "intellectual property" that has been browbeaten into the public by corporat...

Re: STGOD 2020 Concept/Planning Thread

Uhhm. Multiple fundamentally different FTL travel paradigms could get rough. Like, if some ships basically teleport point-to-point (BSG) while others have to physically traverse the intervening space (or a parallel B5-like hyperspace dimension), it has some pretty marked effects on how the ships int...

Re: STGOD 2020 Concept/Planning Thread

Just to be clear, what's the planned backstory for the "gameplay region?" My default STGOD space nation is Earth-descended human colonists who sort of englobed a couple of pre-FTL intelligent species in their immediate neighborhood; is that workable? How do we envision FTL working, anyway?...
