Re: Democrats backing away from gun control

Thing is, the government USED TO routinely regulate industries with the goal of protecting the interests of the citizens; that's where things like our existing water and air quality regulations come from in the first place. That's where the abolition of leaded gasoline and reduction of lead exposure...

Re: Death Squadron in the Milky Way(RAR)

Also, Simon, what is the last part of your post supposed to mean? Of course I'm confident. While I may not know much about the JSDF, this is a subject I am expert in. Yes, the 501st is a pure clone unit. Of all legions in the Empire, would it not be Vader's Fist to receive this distinction? There's...

Maybe sort of compensating for the massive dry spell while he worked on that big book of O-Chul stuff.

And, hm. Andie is now actually doing something useful, but it's exactly what she'd be doing as engineer, and has nothing to do with captaincy. Go figure.

Re: Trump Dump: Foreign Policy (Thread I)

Yeah.

I would love to have a pipeline over to a parallel universe where Obama did roughly what Trump did on the military secrets. Or, conversely, where Clinton did it.

Re: Democrats backing away from gun control

Perhaps, but I also think that many of the single-issue gun voters are so conditioned to think that Democrat=anti-gun that they'll likely never vote anything other than Republican (or maybe Libertarian). If what you're saying is true, then it's because the Democrats dug themselves into a hole. In w...

Re: Republican candidate 'body-slams' Guardian reporter in Montana

He won, and convincingly too. So there's that. It would appear that he enjoyed a considerable advantage that the majority of all ballots cast in the entire state had already been cast , before he assaulted a reporter. It would have been hard for him to lose, as Civil War Man pointed out already. Th...

The problem is, she's trying poorly conceived ideas that can easily get them all killed. Or ideas that can permanently trap them. And she's not even acknowledging that these problems are happening- she's saying stuff like "Wait, I told you to go to Point A not Point B," when Point B is dir...

So now Trump lies about the location of aircraft carriers but leaks the location of submarines off the coast of Korea. Which is sort of the exact opposite of what you are supposed to do with those two things. *Le sigh* You guys are so easy to troll these days. The thing is, we've got the White Hous...

Re: Death Squadron in the Milky Way(RAR)

Also, about the clone thing; in ANH, Leia questions the authenticity of Luke's disguise based on his height. Isn't that a weird thing to do if you can't rely on stormtroopers being exactly the same height? Nope. Lots of military units, especially units that have to look good on a parade ground, hav...

A bit of googling shows that J. K. Rowling came up with a delightful tweet about Trump, saying simply: "You tiny, tiny, tiny little man."

Re: Democrats backing away from gun control

There are so many ways the Democrats could have won the 2016 election that we really, really ought to pick a grab-bag of half a dozen of them, and pursue all of them at once.

Re: Democrats backing away from gun control

Frankly, at this point a (D) from anywhere has influence by virtue of having a seat somewhere. That confers leverage when trying to build a majority. Especially since a Montana Democrat has relatively little to lose by canvassing with Republicans on a particular vote.

In fairness, Sarek and Spock were supposed to be on bad terms prior to the events of Journey to Babel from the original series... but there's such a thing as taking it too far.

Re: Democrats backing away from gun control

If the Democrats move away from gun control, will they have any new policies for dealing with gun related deaths, or are they just deemed "not popular enough to address?" The Democrats have a suite of policies that deal with poverty and crime (causes of gun murders) and untreated or poorl...

Re: The Nazi Plan For Russia

See, here's the thing. Every part of Western civilization that existed after about 300 AD was in some way influenced or in part defined by interactions with Christianity. By the end of the Middle Ages, Christianity was the dominant religion everywhere in Europe. There is no way to distinguish betwee...

Well, Andi is doing a remarkably good job of exemplifying poor leadership in a crisis. I'd accuse her of being a straw character, but honestly a lot of us have had bosses like that; the only difference is that they usually didn't hit the previous boss over the head with a wrench to get into the posi...

Well, that's fucked up. It makes me wonder why they didn't catch the fuck sooner, if he was making terrorist threats on line. What causes me to pause rather than accept this argument is that these characteristically Christian forms of atrocious behavior had other characteristic 'tells.' Not just purges of undesirables and heretics, but also preoccupation with deathbed (or death-at-the-stake) conversions. Not just putting p...

Re: The Nazi Plan For Russia

The short version is that Hitler was in favor of promoting a Nazi version of Christianity and disliked the idea of an independent Christian Church not under the control of the Nazi state. Everything should be subject to the control and subordinate to the Nazi state. His version of Christianity is a...

Re: Gurney equations, Explosively formed penetrators and kinetic energy

Do you seriously think that a plate two thirds of a millimeter thick is going to fully absorb the X-ray pulse of a nuclear weapon? What's the tenth-value (or half-value, or whatever) thickness for X-rays in tungsten? All x-ray emissions in an Orion pulse unit are absorbed by the beryllium filler, v...

In the design I am looking at, the drive plate is replaced by a thin sheet of tungsten. That is the only modification. The metal plate, which becomes the flyer in this case, is not supposed to melt, only reaching superplastic temperatures while remaining intact. Things made out of atoms do not rema...

Re: Gurney equations, Explosively formed penetrators and kinetic energy

As I said, if E is energy density, you didn't plug that in, you plugged in energy on its own. Although actually energy density would fail dimensional analysis too, what wouldn't would be specific energy. Would you like me to continuously update the original post to reflect the ongoing discussion? E...
