So...uhhhh...tonight's episode went rather off the book rails. Thoughts?

Re: Xenobiology Speculation/Question

Yeah, I think my problem is I'm trying to combine two things that individually have had some speculation, but combined not so much. Most exobiology/extremophile speculation/science has one or the other, not both.

Xenobiology Speculation/Question

Want to run something past the folks who are more inherently hard science than I am. I'm utilizing a star system generation problem (Astrosynthesis 3, specifically, with some GURPS mods built in for extra detail) and the thing has spit out a number of Ammonia/Methane worlds with a significant popula...

Mind if I ask which CBO report you read? I thought the report(if we're thinking of the same CBO report, mind) said people were quitting jobs they didn't want because they didn't have to keep them now for insurance reasons. Didn't mean the jobs weren't still on the market. Did I miss something? Just...

Well, clean water and basic medicine are probably a higher hit than social issues. Hierarchy of needs and all that.

Re: Mars and Earth Switch Places - Effect on climate?

Woah slowdown for a second. I don't think that terraforming calculator accounts for internal geological heat produced by Earth itself. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still catastrophic for human civilization, but a not-inconsiderate amount of the heat on the surface here is produced internally, be...

Don't get me wrong, a static and/or guerrilla defense is demanding but certainly not in the same way that we had to move. Not to mention, we did this is hot, humid weather including out in the Mojave desert where as, unless I'm mistaken, Stalingrad took place during cooler months. My wife's now 80-...

I remember Bendis talking about how they're going to have to do something about the whole crime-riddled "Hell's Kitchen" thing - apparently that neighbourhood is actually pretty nice these days. Yeah, it's a pretty tame stretch of ground nowadays. Some good places to eat though, not that ...

Re: NYPD assaults a judge, intimidates witnesses, lies to DA

How many of those incidents do we need to consider this SOP for cops in the USA? The USA is more than NYC, thankfully. That's a broad assessment for the entire country. NYC has unique problems, to which they've created police forces that are entirely staffed with Berserkers from the Cult of Odin. T...

Agreed. You get exactly what it says on the tin, and goddamnit, they do it well. You go in expecting a well made two hour long live action anime, and you will not be disappointed.

Re: The end of Windows XP and the joy of your heathcare

I think a big part of it was that Vista was a trainwreck that as many people avoided as possible.
My desktop is still running XP, in fact. But it's a basic gaming and internet platform, while my laptop where I do actual work is running 7.

Of course, this all depends on if Tolwyn has some genetically engineered buddies determined to establish an empire of the ubermensch in this timeline or not.

I agree with the general opinion on Zarek over at SB-I did not like the track his character arc took in season 4. He redeemed himself over New Caprica and it should've stayed that way.

Yes, but isn't that part of Australia pretty much uninhabited anyway? To the point they could use some more intensive methods without huge knock-off effects?
I genuinely don't know, my knowledge of Australian geography is spotty best.

Except for the fact that there's some evidence that Roe v. Wade actually hardened opposition to abortion rights, so maybe they've decided on a 'soft sell' strategy for the time being until things are even further along. I mean, not for nothing, it's worked real frigging well for the last four or fiv...

I've actually had to smack this argument down, both in real life and over facebook. It's incredibly, staggeringly, ignorant.

Killing time waiting for my wife to figure out what paperbacks she wanted, I was flipping through a book on Steampunk. Generally attractive women, cool gadgets, all that. Imagine my surprise when I encountered something about a "steampunk lightsaber" that arose out of a discussion on the w...
