Re: anti vaxer and Islam in Indonesia

In Islam, preservation of life supercedes preservation of faith. That is to say, you can 100% eat pork, inject Porcine Heparins, drink alcohol, or eat of haram food if you are forced to by necessity rather than 'spurred' to by 'desire'. If you look at the verses that deal with the topic of halal/har...

This is actually a fascinating article! I wonder if the results are generalizable outside of breast cancer. Copy/pasted the abstract below: Exosomes Mediate Stromal Mobilization of Autocrine Wnt-PCP Signaling in Breast Cancer Cell Migration. Abstract Stroma in the tumor microenvironment plays a crit...

I thought we've known about the relationship between Buboes, Bubonic/Pneumonic Plague, Yersinia Pestis, and Black Death for a long time now?

Re: X Parasites invade Star Wars

Not sure if I agree with that phrasing. The way it's said in the game (though I'd have to think a lot more before I could decide how well this correlates to what we later observe) the X are all clones that can kill and mimic their hosts. So it's not that the SA-X clone is a smarter X parasite; its t...

Undeserved Compliments

Do these do more good than harm or more harm than good in general? I'm not talking about being blatantly dishonest or going to the extremes. I'd like to limit this discussion to two settings: 1.) Your child. Telling your four year old child that their drawing is 'nice' when it really is at best "ave...

Re: Dalek vs. Phase III Dark Trooper

Magic is the best explanation. Either that, or we're going to find ourselves inventing new methods, reasons, and Dalek powers out of thin air just to try to keep up to that scene. Put it this way: There isn't enough bandwidth on the internet to download the internet in a minute. As such, you'd liter...

Re: Swap firepower, shielding, and armor levels.

@TheHammer: Your opening post - as Sanchez points out - is very poorly thought out. Since Trek technology, construction, materials, and infrastructure remain what they are, they will be incapable of repairing, refuelling, rebuilding, or constructing new Wars-style weaponry, armors and shielding. If ...

Re: Why can't you be asked to testify against yourself?

Another thing: sometimes a verdict of "guilty" is made incorrectly. I think the sad part is that the reality of this statement has never sunk in for me. I mean, when you say it it seems obvious - our justice isn't perfect and we get things wrong from time to time. I gotta admit - I feel kind of stu...

Re: Why can't you be asked to testify against yourself?

I think the problem I had stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of what "being asked to testify against yourself" entails. I'm lucky to be privileged. I've grown up in a society where I just *assumed* you're innocent till proven guilty. Where you could refuse to answer any question you want when...

Re: Why can't you be asked to testify against yourself?

Say - hypothetically - you could not arbitrarily refuse to give evidence against yourself. A confession "extracted under duress" would still be no more valid than it is right now. As far as not being required to answer the prosecutor, I guess I'm not seeing how this helps the cause of justice at all...

Why can't you be asked to testify against yourself?

Per US law, there's this idea that you cannot be asked to testify against yourself. I'm no juror or legalist, and have at best a passing understanding of the interpretation of law. Maybe I'm reading this wrong or something - but why is this a right? It would seem to me the most obvious question to a...

Re: Small Soldiers in Toy Story

Let's note that the toys are fully capable of moving in the presence of humans, they just have a talent for playing possum; the behavior at Sid's backyard amply demonstrates that. Also, I'd say the Toy Story toys are a hell of a lot more durable than the Small Soldiers - remember just how many of S...

Andy's Mum *WOULDN'T* interfere. All indications are that they'd scream bloody murder and run for the hills at the sight of a talking toy. The dog on the other hand is quite a different story, he might well kill off the entire commando squad if they're unfortunate enough to encounter him before they...

Re: Small Soldiers in Toy Story

@Batman: We know that Sid lives next door. Sid has enough ammo to meet even the commandoes' wet-dreams. We see the commandoes tactically retreat on more than one occasion, so if they survive the initial encounter, the odds they "search and find stuff to destroy with" is solid. We know that toys can ...

Precisely. And check out the escalation they pull in part 8/9 - bringing in the new shipments of commandoes, laying siege to the house, etc. etc.

We never see anything on that level in Toy Story.

Re: Small Soldiers in Toy Story

With the Gorgonites in the picture, the commandoes aren't likely to get any stealth/sneak attacks in. To begin with, the gorgonites all go into hiding throughout Andy's room - and house. Andy's toys doubtlessly come into contact with them way before the Commandoes will. The Commandoes might initiall...

An adolescent is a different story; if they don't have self-control by the time they're 13, you fucked up as a parent. I know this wasn't the point you were making (which I overall tend to agree with), but I'm curious about this statement of yours. I would say that I was a *very* choleric child at ...

Does the episode - by any chance - explain why the borg don't just assimilate voyager to get the information they need on destructive weaponary manufacture? Lord knows that the Borg are able to learn by assimilating them, and the review SFDebris put up makes it seem like the Voyager crew had already...

Ironically, that's what I'd actually *expect* to happen. We'll have an episode where the crack-scientist comes up with a "brand new super-intelligent" way to secure the corridors against attack. But then it starts registering the humans as a threat!!! 8-deaths later, we get a push in on Kirk's horri...
