Re: The Harm of Belief in God
While many other animals have minor capacities for superstitious behavior, humans do it best. For the life of me, I will never understand why people who claim critical thinking and rationality as some of the most important values in their lives fail to comprehend the fact that we have evolved to be...

Re: 6 years later, John Carmack admits noone could see Doom
I'd often use them to take down charging Pinky demons, purely because they just run in straight lines and it only takes a few to kill one. It also helped that by the time I'd encountered the next one I'd have collected a whole heap of the damn thing.
Other than that they were pretty damn useless.

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
Interesting. IA3 has an "Air Cadre" as consisting of 2 Mantas, 4 Tiger Sharks and 10 Barracudas. What sort of firepower would we grant Imperial repulsor tanks? They've only really featured in games, IIRC. In Empire at War, for what it's worth, they seemed a level above AT-STs, if that's an...

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
ROTS ICS lists max airspeed for a droid HMP as 14200 kph. Between them, the AOTC and ICS gives starfighter atmospheric speeds between 12000 (Aethersprite) and 62000 kph (Utapaun fighter). A TIE/ln will have a comparable powerplant and should fall in that range. Even a Theta-class shuttle can do 200...

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
I'm a bit unsure about whether this would really count as fluff or not, but in IA3 there's an Ordo Xenos fact sheet for each of the Tau vehicles. Under the Armour section for the Manta it has "Energy Shields - Type Unknown". Unfortunately this doesn't tell us anything about the strength of...

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
Aye. A more appropriate Imperial equivalent would be the Sentinel landing craft, or another similar vehicle. Additionaly, the main purpose of this thread was to see how the ground forces of each side could stack up to each other. That question becomes a bit moot when you have 700 metre long warships...

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
Couldn't one argue that a CR-90 Corvette could operate out of a ground base as well then? Or, if we're going for troop transports Acclamators. My comment was intended to point out that Mantas seem to be a somewhat standard part of Tau ground campaigns, not that it could operate out of ground bases....

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
In universe, the Manta is actually an escort vessel, like the Imperium's Sword- or Cobra-class destroyers. The rationalization is that only the Tau have fine enough propulsion control to effectively maneuver their escort spaceships in atmosphere, and that they are also the only race that is really ...

Re: Tau vs Empire (on the ground)
I'm not sure how well a tank-mounted railgun would perform against an AT-AT, but Imperial Armour 3 states that the Tau do have two aircrat capable of downing shielded Titans - the Manta and a new variant of the Tiger Shark (shown in the text to be capable of dowing a Warhound Titan in a single straf...

AI behaviors would fix most of the "left them alone" idiocies of the current system. You should be able to set cavalry to look after themselves with a series of simple directives, e.g. if they come under infantry fire, they should retreat. They already had such a setting for skirmisher ca...

Re: New Total War title?
Very true. There's certainly no shortage of interesting and important conflicts during that era. A game spanning from 1824 to 1908 could have a lot of potential. The 19th century saw quite a few inovations in both land and naval warfare, both in terms of tactics and technology. It'll certainly be in...

Re: New Total War title?
The Total War website has a timer that counts back from 2006 to 1908. Possible indication of a new game in the series. Anyone care to speculate? obvious suggestion would be a WWI era game starting in 1908, or possibly a "Victoria Total War" ending on that date. Edit: Crappy spelling is cr...

Re: Fire Warrior novel
Fire Warrior is an interesting book for the view it gives us of Tau society. It doesn't outright state much, but through implications a lot of the workings of Tau society and their ideology is made rather clear through it. Regarding wankery, the only thing that really bothered me was the Tau/Imperi...

Migrants Flee Italian Town Due To Threats
(CNN) -- The message blaring out of the speakers on the van was stark: "Any black person who is hiding in Rosarno should get out. If we catch you, we will kill you." Abdul Rashid Muhammad Mahmoud Iddris got out. He's one of hundreds -- perhaps thousands -- of African migrants taken by bus...

Frankly, arguing that Inquisitors are generals is...... Are we having different definitions of what a general is? A general isn't someone who has an army. He's a military leader who actually plans campaigns, details troops, train them and supply and support them. The Inquisitors don't do that. Actu...

Re: SGU 110: "Justice" (Spoilers)
One of the better episodes so far, IMO. A nicely intriguing plot with an excellent ending. It'll certainly be interesting to see how things progress with the ship's Ancient expert and chief of the science team now out of the picture. Obviously, Rush is going to hop in that ship and come back at a la...

I'd say around 3 - 6 hours. There are only two shows I watch regularly anymore (Mythbusters and Stargate Universe), but occasionally I might flick through the documentary channels to see if there's anything interesting on.

Well, they've been spending the last few months comparing Obama to Hitler, so I suppose that it's only natural that they'd bring up the Holocaust sooner or later. I also find it hilarious that the banner on the left of the picture is being held upside-down. You really couldn't parody these people an...

Re: Italy bribes Taliban, leaves; doesn't tell French soldiers
Does anyone by any chance have an idea as to why Italy failed to tell anyone else what was going on? Was it some sense of pride, a sort of feeling that they shouldn't be dealing with the enemy? The denials over the bribery that was posted eariler in this thread means that it's highly unlikely that t...
