Re: Trump Dump: Foreign Policy (Thead I)

Also, he may honestly think this kind of grandstanding is a good idea for other reasons. Insofar as Trumpolini is applying ANY skill set to his job, it's the skill set of a real estate tycoon who specializes in conning and pressuring people into unfavorable deals (like voting to make him president)...

Yeah, the whole health care thing, and how its backfired on the Republicans, is just beautiful, beautiful karma.

Re: Logan

Its also rather glaringly obvious that every single film thus far has had a straight white male human as the lead, though I'll credit them for doing much better with this on the TV shows. The fact the source material is largely straight white male humans might have something to do with that. Well, ...

Re: US grants asylum to Amos Yee

I have a suspicion its because they like the freedom of be racist (or don't care enough about it) but not the freedom to fire back against said racists. Yeah. I've noticed a lot of Right wing bigot types will use "free speech" to defend their right to express their views (on which point t...

Re: US grants asylum to Amos Yee

Between this, Yiannopoulos, and Trump's comments sexualizing underage girls (and unconfirmed reports of him raping underage girls), I'm noticing a disturbing trend on the Alt. Right of condoning and promoting, or at least turning a blind eye toward, sexual abuse of the underage. I suppose it makes s...

Re: Trump Dump: Internal Policy (Thead I)

Already posted in the Trump foreign policy thread, I believe.

If true, its just Trump mistaking showmanship for diplomacy again, by the sounds of it. And insulting our allies, of course.

Re: Logan

Oh, I agree it needed more work. But at least the film felt like a small breath of fresh air. I mean, I get why Marvel might want to stick with a winning formula, and its important not to stray too far, so the films still feel like they're part of the same universe. But at the same time, I do think ...

Re: Trump Dump: Foreign Policy (Thead I)

Well it's a fantastic idea if you operate under the assumption that burning bridges is exactly what Trump is trying to do. Or that he simply doesn't care. Geopolitical Trolling. And that's trademarked and copyrighted as of now. Yeah, it seems to just be a simple gesture designed to appeal to his id...

Burning bridges with NATO is probably exactly what Putin wants Trump to do.

Re: Star Wars: Rebels

Look, if your standard for liking the show's handling of Thrawn was "Thrawn wins completely, kills off the entire Rebel leadership and the Ghost crew"... well, then you were always going to be disappointed, because canon. Getting to take a nice big bite out of their fleet and kill a recurr...

Re: Logan

Logan sounds like its at the opposite extreme, though. Wow. So you've not even seen Logan and you're using it to springboard into shitting on Civil War yet again? You're entitled to your opinion but it seems incredibly petty. Go back and read the thread carefully: I was not the one who brought up C...

Re: Brexit: UK to leave single market, says Theresa May

Not as stupid as thinking WWII is somehow relevant, as though Germany needs to be kept under control over seventy years later or the Nazis might win. Hell, with Brexit, I'd say that contemporary Britain is (marginally) closer to being Nazi than contemporary Germany. Maybe that's why UKIP is defendin...

Re: Logan

Its a bit off-topic for this thread, but I think it would have helped a great deal to have more of a sense of lasting consequences. One of my big gripes with the film is that it takes a very serious and potentially dark subject (friends and allies torn apart by a civil war) and... it carries very li...

Re: Logan

I don't know. Having registration specifically target mutants while leaving other super humans alone would be ludicrous (which admittedly bigotry often is), and if you have all super humans targeted... well, that's basically the situation in canon. It would also paint the pro-registration side in a ...

Re: Logan

I can't help but think that mutants would have probably fared better if they were in the MCU. They wouldn't stand out so much as the only super humans, and their would be other super humans who are viewed heroically by the general public. And while that's no guarantee of safety (see the Inhumans, wh...

Re: Harry Dresden vs. Palpatine.

Well, that, and killing him would risk pissing off Mab. Mab is not a safe person to create a diplomatic incident with, and she can hold a grudge for a very long time. Edit: Of course, Harry's own morals would still tell him that magic is not supposed to be used to kill mortals. But we've also seen t...

Re: Harry Dresden vs. Palpatine.

You know, now that I think about it, Michael vs. Palpatine might have been a fairly even match, if the Sword could negate ranged Dark Side attacks.

Re: Harry Dresden vs. Palpatine.

Harry is explicitly unable to use one of the Swords as anything more than a sharp bit of metal, because his faith is in magic over the power they represent. Harry, at least late series Harry, isn't lacking in belief in God. He's just wary around the Christian religion because he's not sure that God...

Its been pretty much established that the Ghost and at least some of its crew will survive until the Battle of Scarif, in any case.

Re: Trump Dump: Internal Policy (Thead I)

I hope so, not just because it will make it easier to block the far Right's legislation, but because breaking Republican solidarity is going to be necessary to impeach if the various legal cases and investigations into Trump do yield something sufficient to try him.

Re: Star Wars: Rebels

So the moral of the story is that if you tie Thrawn's hands in a bunch of different ways, even he can lose?

Not sure how that shows him in a bad light, even if it may not be very satisfying to watch.

Re: Star Wars: Rebels

That's not to say Thrawn is incompetent or anything, of course. He made a very impressive showing against the Rebels in the original novels. But he's not nearly as unbeatable as people sometimes make him out to be, especially when going against Force users.

Possibly, depending on the country. I think that much like support for single payer health care, its probably only going to take off in the US after its been tried and worked in most other western countries. Though that might be sooner than you think- its already been tried in some parts of Europe, ...

How was he outnumbered and outgunned? As of TTT the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant were about evenly matched. And he lost completely or partially my ass. Yes, he didn't 'succeed' completely. Not the same thing. HTTE-he doesn't get the ships he's trying to steal, because Lando manages to crip...
