Re: What are you reading right now?

Just finished Shadowland and about to start on Daredevil: Reborn in my marathoning of Daredevil that really only started to impress a girl. Meanwhile I was at friends' last week and one of them had boxes filled with books ready to go to Goodwill, in which I found a bunch of Greg Ruckas, including th...

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Spoilers)

Let's wind the clocks back a year. These cops and lawyers wouldn't dare cross any of you. I mean what happened? Did... did your balls drop off? Hmm? So at LEAST a year has passed. Don't you mean at most a year? Assuming we take Batman's alliance with Gordon and incarceration of Falcone as the tippi...

Re: What are you reading right now?

We actually have more room for new fans over at Marvel, so welcome aboard! :P Actually, I've always been a fan of both DC & Marvel and their stable of superheroes. I was so dismissive of Matt for ages because his superpower was "he isn't really blind." If only someone had sat be down years ago and ...

Working through the Brubaker run on Daredevil as part of my induction into the world of Marvel.

Not that this counts as a conversion from DC or anything.

And Bruce being a wreck didn't really gel with the end of TDK either. Since well there's no indication he's a wreck at the end of that film, he running and using the batpod fine. And TDK wasn't supposed to be that long after BB as far as I know. So really this batman had a really short career as a ...

Re: How does one deal with a co-worker with ADHD?

This other suggestion that might not be the most popular idea around here, but I have found that one of the most productive techniques to help focus is clearing one's head with meditation and prayer. It can really help with focusing by getting rid of distractions. I know it's not the most 'rational...

Re: Justified action or being an asshole? Which is it?

What you appear to be saying here is that white Europeans, for the majority of human history, have been insane? Is that your intent? You are missing the point. I thought the point was that "anyone who considers any biological human to be less than human is insane." If that isn't the point, what did...

Re: Justified action or being an asshole? Which is it?

This is starting to approach the issue of how you deal with somebody so insane that they can't understand the morality. Because that is what this Belgian and crutch hating other is. His understanding of reality (Belgians =/= human) is out of whack with what actually IS true. What about this guy tha...

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Spoilers)

This film.. I couldn't say who this film was supposed to be about. If it was the movie I wanted, the movie I felt it had the most potential to be, then it would be about Gotham City - about the thief who stood up to the people she was scared of, about the cop whose idealistic optimism shook his Com...

Re: When is it appropriate to use the term slavery?

As slavery still exists, and as historical slavery still has an ugly legacy in our world, I generally follow the rule of thumb that: Times it is appropriate to use "slavery:" When a human being is treated as an object to be owned, bought or sold, with little or no regard to their humanity and with a...

Rob, have you tried NYPL's website? They have a collection of epubs available through a digitization process with Google and a lending system.

Though I'm buggered if I know how the lending e-book system works. Let me know if you try it!

With you on that.

Of course, there's always this factor in most superhero universes, which I think emphasizes just how flawed their justice system can be.

I am continually surprised (in that 'yes, I know it's due to narrative imperative shutup' way) that New Jersey or whichever state Gotham is in, has not introduced the death penalty, because while I understand vigilantes on the streets being averse to killing, on the 50th time Joker escaped and went ...

Ye-ah, I'm not the person for the conversation you wish to have, Purple, because: a) I do not derive my morality from an extensive review of the peer review literature. I don't know anyone who does, and I'd be surprised if any sociologists intended their work to be taken as a basis for morality. I f...

Re: Justified action or being an asshole? Which is it?

Well the purpose of this is to give it a try. So yea, let's assume that in order for something to be right you have to demonstrate a good reason why it is right that goes beyond that gut feeling we all get. If nothing else at least show where said gut feeling comes from in a way similar to what's b...

To play devils advocate for a moment. (because I enjoy it) Assuming that there really is NO way of convincing people to think this way. As in, to accept that all living beings deserve respect by virtue of being alive. Under our assumption that would mean that said stance actually has no logical arg...

I'm not going to click the link- reading this thread itself is traumatic enough. But it sometimes seems to me that there are levels of empathy that you can't simply argue a person to. Or rather, I can't, because I start with the basic common assumption that living beings deserve respect, and sentien...

He didn't really kill Ra's Al Ghul. He just didn't save him. :P I realize that simply not using a gun to do the act as opposed to letting it happen is arguably a very superficial distinction but it was clearly important to Bruce Wayne. And he just outright did it. My point is that he's making up th...

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Spoilers)

Did I just see Batman break his no-guns and no-killing rule near the end? About 4-5 minutes before the bomb was about to go, Batman in his "Bat" aircraft hovers right in front of the bomb truck and fires what appears to be several armor-piercing rounds that end up killing the driver of the truck. T...

Just picked up Anansi Boys during the NOOK sale last weekend. So far it's piqued my interest but I suspect like most Gaiman books it'll take a bit to really ramp up. Have you read American Gods? It's not required, as it's not a strict sequel, but they're in the same universe. Fuck yes. Then you'll ...

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but only in a "so bad it's good" way. I honestly spent the entire time laughing in despair and at one point I think I scratched my eyelids trying to claw out the science. If you have a good suspension of disbelief, I'm sure it's very enjoyable, but I don't recommend it for: ...
